It's The Sounds Not Stage Moves

Knob Gaze, like Shoegazers, embrace immersion over spectacle. But, instead of guitar effect pedals, we disappear into modular synthesisers, sound modules, keyboards, samplers and laptops. We celebrate performers who lean over glowing hardware interfaces, shaping living textures, evolving filters, performing electronic compositions and soundscapes.

KNOB GAZE

Future belongs to those who can't take their eyes off knobs

Knob Gaze

Every generation of electronic musicians develops its own stage presence - or apparent lack of one.

In the late '80s and early '90s Shoegaze bands became synonymous with performers seemingly transfixed by the floor, surrounded by pedals and lost in oceans of reverb and feedback.

Today's electronic music composers and performers have inherited the same spirit; only the gaze has shifted a few feet higher!

It's not really a genre but more an attitude with a culture of musicians who treat the electronics as a living instrument in constant negotiation.

Melodies are only a starting point, the real performance happens in the hands hovering over filter cutoffs, modulation depths, envelopes, wavefolders, sequencers and effects.

Every subtle adjustment rewrites the music in real time.

MIND

Tactile sonic immersion

Knob Gaze isn't about virtuosity in the traditional sense, but more about immersion.

It's about the pursuit of evolving textures rather than perfect notes, of atmosphere rather than spectacle. It celebrates curiosity over choreography, experimentation over certainty, and the understanding that the defining moment of a performance might not be a keyboard solo, but from the slow turn of a filter knob, the retriggering of a sample, or the unexpected interaction between two devices.

To the uninitiated, a Knob Gaze performance can appear almost motionless: a performer leaning over a rack of controls (some illuminated), making adjustments while sonic landscapes emerge from the speakers. Look closer, and you'll find an improvisation every bit as physical as jazz, every bit as expressive as a guitarist coaxing feedback from an overdriven amp.

The instrument isn't just being played - it's being continuously rebuilt.

In a world dominated by visual spectacle, we prioritize deep listening. Every filter sweep, oscillator detune, and decay adjustment is an expressive decision. There is no crowd animation — only shared absorption in evolving performance.

Hardware Artisans

Max Cooper: "The way I work is more like a sculptor than a musician"

Over the past decade, Max Cooper has emerged as one of the UK's most innovative and interesting electronic producers, creating a body of work that leans heavily on natural themes and evocative soundscapes, and spans the realms of audio and visual arts. We visited Max in his studio following his recent Seme project, an EP and live performance that saw him bridging the gap between electronic music and modern classical. The piece was recently performed at both the Salzburg Easter Festival and London's Barbican.eet the electronic performers and sound designers who champion physical control surfaces and spontaneous hardware synthesis.

METHOD

The five stages of a Knob Gaze performance

Every session flows through a structured ritual of physical exploration, moving from subtle tone shaping to full sonic

STEP 1

Tone Foundation

Selecting raw waveforms and initializing voltage parameters. Oscillator frequencies are gently detuned to establish harmonic warmth.

STEP 2

Voltage Patching

Routing control voltage across LFOs and envelopes to introduce subtle organic movement into static signals.

STEP 3

Tactile Sculpting

Manual filter cutoff and resonance adjustments guide the sonic energy, turning microscopic turns into expressive

STEP 4

Spatial Decay

Saturating the mix with tape delay feedback and spatial reverb matrixes, letting echoes drift and overlap infinitely.

STEP 5

Total Immersion

The performer and instrument dissolve into a single feedback loop. Mindful, motionless concentration meets pure sound.

PRACTICE

Core hardware disciplines

We explore multiple physical mediums of sound synthesis, keeping the focus entirely on tactile manipulation and active listening.

Eurorack Modular

Building unpredictable sound networks through physical patch cables and potentiometer manipulation across multi-voice modular systems.

Analog Synthesizers

Pure subtractive and additive synthesis using dedicated hardware knobs, tactile switches, and discrete electronic circuitry.

Tape & Delay Loopers

Creating rich hypnotic layers by controlling tape head speed, reel degradation, and magnetic echo units in real time.

Generative Sequencers

Programming evolving rhythmic patterns using physical step buttons, rotary encoders, and probability dials.
